river costa rica
river costa rica
During the course of a single year many zones in Costa Rica receive between 150-200 inches of rain which keeps everything lush and green but also swells many River valleys as the water rushes throughout the country out to sea.
With so much water Costa Rica has opted to use some rivers for hydro-electric projects which provides 80% of the Costa Ricas energy needs.
In addition to a renewable energy source there are dozens of a river activities in Costa Rica ranging from action packed rafting adventures to slow paced wildlife observation floats.
The Tarcoles River is formed by the convergence of two rivers, the Virilla and the Grande de San Ramon, and empties into the Pacific ocean. In total, the rivers watershed covers over 2000 km?.
It forms the northern border of the Carara Biological Reserve, and helps irrigate important agricultural areas of the country. In addition to its agricultural significance, the river also helps generate electricity.
The river is perhaps best known for its abundance of American crocodiles. Its said that the Tarcoles River has one of the highest populations of crocodiles in the entire world 25 crocodiles per square kilometer.
Several tour operators take advantage of this fact by offering river tours that guarantee croc sightings.
Much of the time these large reptiles (which can grow to a length of seven meters) can be spotted swimming through the river or sunbathing along the banks.
The Tempisque River's dry tropical forest is an important habitat for several different species of monkeys, crocodiles, iguanas, and migratory and aquatic birds such as the roseate spoonbill, white ibis, greets egret, little blue heron, tricoled heron, and bare throated tiger heron.
The variety of birds in this region is the most extensive in the entire country.
The southern leg of the river passes through the Palo Verde National Park, a legitimate bird watching paradise, encompassing mangroves, swamp and both fresh water and salt water lagoons.
It is a calm, relaxing float through one of Costa Rica’s prized national parks, an unforgettable experience. Flora and Fauna of Tempisque River
